Sinulog in the Philippines. Mardi Gras for the Infant Jesus

Pit Senyor!

Sinulog is an annual festival held in Cebu City during the third sunday of January. The word sinulog comes from the Cebuano word sulog which when translated, refers to the movement of water currents.

During the festival, devotees dance to honor the image of the Santo Niño. According to historians, the Sinulog initially started as a dance ritual for the native deities. However, after being introduced to Christianity by Ferdinand Magellan, the natives now dance the Sinulog as a sign of reverence to the Santo Niño. Since then, it has evolved into one of the largest festivals in the country; quite a few of the surrounding provinces actually hold their own version of the festival.
