15 Travel apps you can’t do without

In this world of instant information, apps are something we use to get what we need while on the go. I am a member of a travel group on Facebook and there I asked people what travel apps they can’t do without. There are so many answers but here are 15 of them that came up.

Feel free to look into them and check them out. We all are different and our travel needs differ so what works for one may not work for another. I removed Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat and Twitter because these are a given that most of us have.

1 WhatsApp – free communications app used for secure messaging. Popular in Asia, but also used a lot in different parts of the world. Both android and iPhone. I have tried this in Marrakech when our guide was trying to find us. He sent us his location through a function in WhatsApp where you can share your location.

2 Google Maps – a time saver when trying to find places, or to find out where you are. What I like about this is you can get information on how to get to your destination either by walking, taking the public transport or driving. It also has an offline version if you already know beforehand where you want to go.

3 Trail Wallet – this app is for tracking your spending. You can put in your desired or actual daily budget while travelling. Then you use it to monitor how much you have spent.

4 Sygic Travel – an app that is a travel planner and itinerary maker. What is great with this app is you can also use it off-line. That way you can save on use of data. It is not free, though, but I think the cost offsets what you save by not using data.

It has information about all the touristic places, time of opening, website, estimates time the visit will take, etc. You can make a daily trip, either customize one or choose a trip already prepared. It gathers the things you can visit which are near each other.

5 Splitwise – a free tool that monitors what you and your friends or family have spent for each other while travelling together. This way, you can track who owes you, and who you owe money to. You just add the receipt or amount in any currency. Everyone gets paid back.

6 XE Currency Converter – as the name implies, it converts currencies live. It even converts prices of precious metals. Useful specially when trying to figure out credit card and exchange rates.

7 Klook – you can book amentities, tours, travel activities, day trips, transfers while on the go. It also has a section to get inspiration and travel suggestions based on seasons, festivals and interests.

8 Rome2Rio – I myself love this app! Find the best way to get to your destination. It gives you distance, time travel expected and options by bus, train, ferry, air, etc. You can also search and book hotels and car rental.

9 Culture Trip – if you are interested in culture, then this one if for you. It gives you local information from different places around the world.

10 Happy Cow – find vegan restaurants and vegetarian food. Reviews and guides to restaurants that serve vegan, vegetarian, natural food stores, and even recipes. I am sure they are continuously updating the list.

11 Flush – toilet finder with a map. What a relief this can be specially if you are in a place that has no visible signs for restrooms.

12 Alltrails – if you love hiking or just taking walks, then download this. It is your guide for finding hiking trails, camping and running trails all over the world.

13 Ctrip – a great tool to use when travelling within Asia. This is Chinese-based, but not to worry, you can of course have it in English. It is a travel app, but very useful for getting bus and train schedules across Asia. You can buy seats directly as well. Since it is Chinese-based, it of course works best in China, but can also be used on other Asian countries as well.

14 TripIt – a trip planner and flight tracker app. If you have booked several components of your trip from several sites, you can send your confirmation to TripIt and they will make an itinerary for you. This way, you check only one place for everything you have booked.

15 GetYourGuide – use your smartphone to download, store and access your activity tickets. Use the app to find activities, tours, excursions, and much more, at your destination.

I hope you try some of them and tell me about your experience with them. As I get more suggestions, I will add them here in the future.

Keep on travelling.
